Blocking is the well-known way to get rid of a follower, and it is heavier than most situations need — it hides your profile from them entirely and is obvious if they look.

Instagram has a quieter option that simply removes the follow relationship, and it sends no notification.

How to remove a follower

Open your followers list: Go to your profile and tap Followers.
Find the account: Search by username within the list.
Tap the three dots: The menu next to their name.
Choose Remove: They stop following you. They are not notified, and they can follow you again unless you also block them.

Remove versus block

Remove: Ends the follow. They keep full access to your public profile and can re-follow. Silent.
Block: Ends the follow and hides your profile and content from them completely. Obvious if they check.
Restrict: Keeps the follow but quietly limits their comments and messages. Useful for someone you cannot remove socially.

When removing is worth it

For a handful of stray bots it is not worth the effort. A few dozen inactive followers change nothing measurable.
