What the timestamp really is

When a tracker says someone unfollowed you on Tuesday, it means the Tuesday scan no longer found them. They may have left on Tuesday. They may equally have left five days earlier and gone unnoticed because the previous scan was a week ago.

The resolution of any unfollow date is exactly the gap between scans, and no better.

Getting a genuine recent list

1. Scan on a fixed schedule: Weekly gives you weekly resolution. Monthly gives you monthly. Pick the interval you will actually keep to.

3. Diff consecutive files: Names in the older file but not the newer one are your recent departures, accurate to your scan interval.
4. Keep the archive: Old exports cost nothing to store and become more useful the longer the series runs.

The trap of checking too often

Daily unfollow checking is a reliable route to a worse account. It surfaces normal churn as though it were a series of personal rejections, and it pushes people toward reactive unfollowing sprees — which is the behaviour most likely to earn a temporary action block.

Every account loses followers continuously. Bots get purged, people deactivate, interests move on. Weekly at the very most; monthly is better.

What to do with a recent unfollower

Usually nothing. Unfollowing someone back out of symmetry is exactly the follow-for-follow logic that produces a bloated, disengaged following list in the first place.

The one case worth acting on is a pattern — a cluster of departures right after a specific post or a change in posting frequency. That is feedback about content, and it is worth more than any individual name.
