See Who Stopped Following You on Instagram

Why the platform hides it, and how to work it out anyway.

The count drops and there is nowhere in the app to find out who. That is a deliberate design decision, not an oversight.

Instagram treats following as low-stakes and reversible. A public unfollow log would make it confrontational and people would follow less freely, which would make the whole graph less useful. The trade-off is that the answer is entirely on you.

Before you investigate: it may not be a person

A large share of follower drops have nothing to do with anyone deciding to leave.

Spam purges: Instagram removes bot and inauthentic accounts in waves. A sudden overnight drop across many creators at once is almost always this.
Deactivations: Temporarily disabled accounts disappear from your list and come back later.
Suspensions: Accounts removed for policy violations vanish the same way.
Privacy switches: An account going private can change what a scan can see.

The method that actually names names

You need two dated pictures of your follower list and a comparison between them.

Capture a baseline: Request your Instagram data export, or run our free unfollowers tool and save the CSV with today’s date.
Wait: A month is a sensible interval. Anything shorter is mostly noise.
Capture again: Same method, new dated file.
Diff the two: Open both in a spreadsheet. Usernames present in the old file and absent from the new one are your departures.

If you did not take a baseline

Then you cannot recover the answer for the past — the data no longer exists anywhere, including at Instagram, in a form you can query.

What you can do immediately is see who does not follow you back right now. That will not tell you who left last week, but it does tell you where your following list currently stands, and it doubles as the baseline for next month.

A word on why they left

No tool answers this, and speculating is usually wasted effort. The common reasons are unremarkable: interests shift, someone posted more often than a follower wanted, or a follow-back was never going to last.

Can I see exactly who stopped following me?

Only by comparing a follower list you saved earlier against your current one. Without an earlier snapshot, the information no longer exists in retrievable form.

Does Instagram notify me when someone unfollows?

No. Instagram notifies you about new follows only. The count simply changes.

Why did I lose lots of followers overnight?

Almost always a platform-wide removal of spam and bot accounts rather than real people leaving. Those followers were never engaging anyway.

Can someone tell that I noticed they unfollowed me?

No. Viewing your own follower list, or running a scan on it, is completely invisible to everyone else.

Do I get a notification if someone blocks me?

No, and a block looks identical to an unfollow in any comparison. If their profile is unreachable while logged in but visible while logged out, that suggests a block.
