How to Find Unfollowers on Instagram

Four methods that work, ranked by how much effort each one costs you.

Instagram gives you a number that went down and nothing else. Finding out who is behind it means comparing lists yourself, or getting something to compare them for you.

Here are the four realistic methods, from zero effort to most thorough.

Method 1: Check a specific account

If you have a suspicion, open the profile. When someone follows you, Instagram shows a small Follows you label under their username. No label means they do not.

Precise, free, and completely impractical past a handful of accounts.

Method 2: Scan for non-followers

Rather than hunting for who left, get the full list of accounts you follow that do not follow you back. For most people this is the answer they actually wanted.

Method 3: Compare two data exports

This is the only method that finds true unfollowers — people who followed you and then left — using official data.

Request your data at Settings → Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information. Do it again a month later. Anyone in the older follower file but not the newer one has gone.

Slow, but it is Instagram handing you the raw records with nothing in between.

Method 4: A tracker with snapshot history

Dedicated trackers store snapshots so they can show a running unfollow log. Useful in principle; the problem is the price of admission.

Most want your Instagram login, which means server-side access to your account. Read the tracker guide before installing one, and never enter your password into a third-party app.

Reading the results without over-reacting

Not everyone left: A large share of non-followers never followed you at all. They are not unfollowers.
Some are gone, not gone-from-you: Deactivated and suspended accounts look identical to unfollows.
One-sided follows are fine: Keep the accounts you actually read. Reciprocity is not the test.
Go slowly: Clearing hundreds in one session risks a temporary action block.
